A 31-year-old labourer who was arrested
at Itaballi Police Checkpoint with a quantity of marijuana as well as a gram of cocaine, was today charged and remanded for the offence.

Tony Lancaster of Third Avenue, Bartica and Trinity Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The first charge stated that on March 29 at Itaballi Police Checkpoint, he had in his possession 977 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession one gram of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The unrepresented man denied both charges after they were read to him.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Delon Sullivan, stated that on the day in question, police at the Itaballi Police Checkpoint stopped a truck the defendant was on and requested to carry out a search.

A rank, upon checking his haversack unearthed the narcotics and he was arrested and taken into custody.

The court heard while in custody, the defendant admitted to the ranks that the narcotics belonged to him, hence the present charge.

The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to Lancaster on the grounds that the defendant admitted ownership of the drugs and the penalty the charge attracts.

The Magistrate, after listening to the prosecution facts, remanded Lancaster to prison until April 6.
