Police are investigating the death of 54-year-old Leevorn Stanford McGarrel, a sluice attendant known as ‘Shortman’ or ‘Hacket’. McGarrel, who worked for the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) and lived in High Dam, Mahaicony, was found dead at the Farm/Woodlands sluice this morning.

The incident is believed to have occurred between 18:00 hrs on Wednesday, June 5, and 06:40 hrs on Thursday, June 6. McGarrel’s son-in-law, Llavar Welch, who also works as a sluice attendant at the same site but on a different shift, discovered the body.

According to Welch, McGarrel began his shift at 18:00 hrs on June 5. When Welch arrived for his shift at 06:40 hrs the following morning, he found McGarrel’s body under the sluice counterweight, a massive three-tonne boulder. The body showed visible crush injuries.

Emergency services were called, and McGarrel’s body was taken to the Mahaicony Hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead. The probe continues.
