If onlookers are to be guided by local political leaders, the persons who used the tragic death of Adrianna Younge as an opportunity to loot, burn public property and rob a series of Chinese supermarkets, did not act on their own accord.  Leaders on both sides believe that these acts were politically instigated.

Two nights ago, Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton told the nation that the rogue elements causing mayhem acted on the instruction of the PPP. He said that the PPP was disturbed by the large multi-ethnic support for justice in Younge’s “murder” so it reacted in a manner that would taint the said movement.

Norton said, “We note that the PPP has been recruiting people that are in conflict with the law. We note that they have been using 10-day workers and criminal elements to penetrate the protests so that they can create mayhem then blame it on APNU/PNCR.”

Norton further affirmed that all that was done to throw the matter under the rug.

Today, at his weekly press conference, PPP General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo said the objective of those who acted against the public interest was to create terror and that the APNU/PNCR is responsible.

Jagdeo said that PNCR politicians were mobilizing kids and criminals across the country to do their dirty work.

“They have done this before. There was not a single time when innocents have been harmed that the PNC has not blamed us, even when it is clear that it was people mobilized by them…The moment they (perpetrators) are charged their (PNCR) lawyers show up.

Jagdeo defended the 10-day workers which he specified are 15k across Guyana and are mostly women. He said that the 10 days workers will not be used in that manner.

Further, Jagdeo said that generating fear suits the opposition’s political purpose and is in keeping with that party’s pattern of behaviour.

He added, “When you burn loot and create mayhem, it affects everyone. Now they claim they didn’t support it and it was the PPP.”

Jagdeo said the police have free rein to act in a professional manner but a manner to maintain law and order.
