oGiven her indigenous roots and continued connection to the nation’s first people, along with the fact that she is an intelligent woman, Juretha Fernandes was selected to serve as the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the APNU. At least this is according to Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton. At his press conference today, Norton explained that following wide consultations within APNU, Fernandes emerged as the consensus pick for the post. “I spoke with all the persons in the APNU and we generally agreed that we needed Juretha Fernandes as the Prime Ministerial candidate. She has the intellect. She is a woman. She is from the Indigenous community and in contact with the Indigenous community, and we believe she’s qualified to be Prime Minister,” Norton stated. When asked about the inclusion of former Alliance For Change (AFC) members like Fernandes, Sherod Duncan and Deonarine (Ricky) Ramsaroop, Norton clarified that they are not members of the PNCR but will be welcomed under the APNU’s broad charter. He said too, that they will be afforded the same rights and privileges as other members.Norton said, “All I can say we’re going to facilitate them and ensure they enjoy all that, all members, whether as the individual level, or the organization level, all members of APNU they will enjoy it.”Moreover, he noted that while PNCR Executive Member Ganesh Mahipaul was considered for the position, he also supported the final decision.
Norton pointed out that the party’s campaign will feature three main faces himself as Leader, Fernandes as Prime Ministerial candidate, and Mahipaul as Chief Senior/ Vice President if the coalition secures government.
