fifth to be opened in 2026
As part of its mission to rapidly transform Guyana, the President Irfaan Ali-led government will be opening four stadiums in 2025 with another set to be unveiled in 2026. According to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jnr., this sets a new record for any country in the region.
During an exclusive interview with this news agency, the minister noted that two of the five stadiums were the infamous failed track and field projects which were inherited from the APNU-AFC led Government.
He said, “The APNU+AFC led government lied to Guyanese year after year that the tracks would be completed knowing fully well that it did not even purchase the synthetic material for the tracks. It was the President Irfaan Ali-led PPP/C government which procured the synthetic material at a cost of more than one million Euros.”
Minister Ramson said both of those facilities, along with the two multi-purpose stadiums, are on schedule for opening this year while the Palmyra international stadium is on schedule for opening next year. “This is a record for any country in the region and any government here, especially when the only comparison from the APNU+AFC led government for a sports facility is the Durban Park project where $600 million remains unaccounted,” said the minister, adding that all five stadiums are being constructed within budget.
The minister also stressed that four of the five stadiums that will be opened this year will each be completed for less than the cost of the $1.6 billion Durban Park project. Once unveiled, these facilities are expected to enhance Guyana’s infrastructural facilities to promote sports tourism while boosting economic development.
