Presidential Candidate for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Aubrey Norton has outlined bold plans to uplift the nation’s youths, should his party win the September 1 poll. At his party’s election campaign launch yesterday at the Square of the Revolution, Norton promised that his government would implement a Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES), aimed at equipping young Guyanese with skills and opportunities for self-sufficiency.

Norton criticized the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government’s youth development efforts, particularly the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) scholarship programme even though it has benefited more than 2000 individuals in 2025 alone. He said many students graduate but the quality of their learning is questionable.

Norton said his government would improve on the foregoing by investing in local and international education for young people. He also promised to increase funding to the University of Guyana (UG) to enhance its teaching capacity. “We will spend money to train our young people at the best universities in the world. We will put resources into the University of Guyana so that it can deliver,” Norton said.

Norton’s appeal to young Guyanese comes at a time when he is facing sharp criticism from several young, ex-party affiliates who claim he sidelined their input and ignored calls for inclusiveness at the party level.

Despite these claims, Norton maintains that his party is committed to rebuilding the education system and equipping the next generation with the tools needed to succeed.

  1. Norton has great plans (ideas) which will not come to fruition.
We have to remember that his forbears were slaves, captured by victorious tribes in mudda africa and sold to the Whites. They were of a tribe that was useless.
