– says it may be symptom of “new, unofficial policing policy”

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) says it is deeply alarmed by the lack of intervention from law enforcement officials following a Toshao stomping a political party’s flag over the weekend.

APNU said that despite uniformed police being present, no action was taken when the Toshao of Wikki/Calcuni violently disrupted a peaceful gathering, tearing and trampling on political flags belonging to a visiting delegation from the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, headed by businessman Azruddin Mohamed.

“That no one was cautioned, detained, or even questioned speaks volumes. It raises the disturbing question: has a new and unofficial policing policy taken effect—one where political allegiance determines enforcement?” APNU asks.

The party added that what should concern every Guyanese citizen, regardless of political affiliation, is that such acts are no longer isolated.

“Reports of harassment, intimidation, and disruption of opposition activities are now coming in from Essequibo, Berbice, and interior communities. The silence and inaction of the authorities in the face of these repeated transgressions suggest not incompetence, but complicity,” the opposition party noted.

It is calling for an immediate investigation into these reports and urges the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), and international election observers to closely monitor the evolving situation.

“Democracy cannot function where the state’s protective agencies are seen to operate as political shields. The integrity of the September 1 elections—and the broader democratic process—must not be sacrificed at the altar of partisan loyalty,” APNU concluded.
