Turnout in Guyana’s September 1, 2025 general and regional elections was at least 58 percent, according to figures released by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
Initial declarations from all 10 districts showed 438,345 valid votes were cast out of an official list of 757,690 electors. That compares with 475,589 votes cast in 2020 out of 661,378 electors, when turnout was much higher.
The qualifier “at least” is used because the true turnout is likely higher than the 58 percent figure suggests. Guyana’s voters’ list is widely regarded as bloated, containing the names of people who have died or emigrated, while still gaining new names from citizens turning 18 since the last election. This means many who are listed could not have voted, making the denominator inflated.
On election day, Guyana Standard observed what appeared to be low turnout at polling stations across Georgetown and its environs, as well as on the East Coast, West Coast, and West Bank of Demerara.
Despite this, the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) increased its vote count to 242,451, up from 233,336 in 2020. The new We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party secured 109,015 votes, while the opposition APNU and AFC, running separately, received 77,973 and 3,611 votes, respectively. In 2020, when APNU and AFC contested as a coalition, they had tallied 217,920 votes.
Even if WIN’s votes came mainly from the APNU+AFC camp, tens of thousands of 2020 APNU+AFC voters remain unaccounted for, pointing to a significant portion of their base staying home on election day.
Well, I think the APNU voters were not impressed with norton.
