19-year-old Naderia James of Baramita, North West District, was granted bail, according to her lawyer Sanjeev Datadin.
James had been remanded on a murder charge last month for killing her 20-year-old boyfriend Kevin Smith after he drunkenly attacked her at their camp on September 18. Smith reportedly struck her with the cutlass, which caused her to stab him with a knife after becoming agitated.
In a Facebook post Thursday, Datadin said that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack agreed with his petition that the murder charge should be amended to manslaughter.
“There was sound legal reasons for this I felt. I’m pleased the DPP agreed,” Datadin said.
Moving forward, Datadin said a preliminary inquiry (PI) is expected to be done in the coming weeks, and that he is making every effort to get James back to her family as soon as possible.
