The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) signed two landmark contracts totalling more than US$235 million, (in excess of 50.5 Billion GYD) marking another significant advancement in the Company’s ongoing Infrastructural Development and Modernisation Programme.
The Agreements signed were:-
1. A US$199 million (43 Billion GYD) contract with Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL), was signed on Monday, November 17, 2025.
2. A US$35.93 million (7.5 Billion GYD) contract with China National Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CMC), signed on Wednesday November 19, 2025.
KPIL Contract US$199 Million (43 Billion GYD).
The contract with KPIL will execute new substations and transmission and distribution lines leading to expansions and upgrades of the national grid including:
1. Construction of 42 km of new 69 kV Transmission Lines
2. Construction of four new 69/13.8 kV Substations at:
· Kuru Kururu – Soesdyke
· Williamsburg – Berbice
· Hydronie – East Bank Essequibo
· Princes Street – Georgetown
3. Construction of a total 18 new primary distribution feeders for the new substations.
4. Upgrade and expansion of the New Georgetown and Garden of Eden Substations
These upgrades will replace outdated infrastructure, install modern electrical and automation systems, integrate SCADA/EMS technologies, and support remote operations from the new and modern Guyana National Control Centre (GNCC), currently under construction.
CMC Contract US$35.93M (7.5 Billion GYD)
The contract with CMC will strengthen and expand GPL’s distribution network through:
1. Construction of more than 193 km of new distribution feeders with smart equipment.
2. Supply of advanced smart distribution equipment.
3. Address unserved areas in Demerara and Berbice.
These improvements will reduce power outages, improve power quality and enhance overall distribution system’s reliability on the East Bank Essequibo, West Coast and West Bank Demerara, East Bank Demerara, East Coast Demerara and East Berbice.
Together, these projects form an ongoing transformative investment in Guyana’s electricity sector, strengthening both transmission and distribution systems’ infrastructure, while positioning GPL to meet the nation’s everincreasing energy demand with greater efficiency, reliability and resilience.
Deodat Indar, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation commended the significance of these contracts, “This contract will strengthen our distribution network and directly support the rapid housing, commercial, and industrial growth across the country.
The construction of the new substations, transmission and distribution lines, and electrification of new areas and the deployment of smart technology will ensure that thousands of customers benefit from reliable electricity. ”
