The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) is urging all miners across the country to comply fully with national mining laws, warning that those who continue to breach regulations will face serious consequences.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commission reiterated President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s directive for stronger enforcement against illegal mining practices, particularly in cases involving poor environmental standards, underreporting of gold production, and the employment of undocumented workers.
According to the GGMC, the legislation governing mining applies uniformly to every community nationwide, including villages located on Amerindian titled lands where mining is pursued as an economic activity. The Commission stressed that no community or miner is exempt from compliance.
At the same time, the agency signaled its willingness to support villages and communities—especially those on Amerindian titled lands—by providing guidance on obtaining the required documentation for legitimate operations. This includes assistance with registering equipment and using proper reporting systems to ensure transparent accounting for gold production and sales.
The Commission also reminded miners that all gold recovered must be sold to authorised buyers, such as the Guyana Gold Board, licensed dealers, or licensed traders. Selling gold outside of these legal channels is considered an offence and can result in the detention of the gold, charges being laid, and seizure of assets.
The GGMC noted growing concern over persistently low gold declarations despite favourable global prices and increased mining activity in several districts. Officials also highlighted ongoing issues with environmental mismanagement, even as the Commission continues outreach, education, and enforcement efforts.
In line with the President’s instructions and working in coordination with the Ministry of Natural Resources, the GGMC said it will intensify its collaboration with other state agencies to address what it described as “lawlessness” by individuals who exploit Guyana’s mineral wealth without providing the lawful returns owed to the state and its citizens.
