The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating a fatal mining incident which occurred on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at about 16:00hrs at “S” Bend Backdam, Chenapou, North Pakaraimas, resulting in the deaths of Cleumiton Da Silva Santos, 37, and Antonio Filho, 44, both Brazilian gold miners.
Preliminary enquiries revealed that the two men were working inside a mining pit when a quantity of sand collapsed into the pit. While other workers managed to escape, both men became trapped and were later retrieved motionless.
Due to the remote location, the bodies are currently at “S” Bend Backdam, and arrangements are being made to transport them to the Mahdia District Hospital, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted.
Investigations are in progress.
