Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha is currently spearheading a cash relief distribution exercise for fisherfolk at the Upper Corentyne Fishermen’s Cooperative Society, as part of a sustained programme of direct support to the fisheries sector.
The initiative fulfils a commitment made by President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali to ensure that fisherfolk receive timely assistance while the sector continues to be modernised and diversified.
A total of 1,704 fisherfolk from the region are set to benefit from the initiative, representing a government investment of $245.6 million.
The relief forms part of a broader package of interventions implemented since 2020, aimed at strengthening livelihoods, improving infrastructure, and enhancing resilience within the fisheries sector.
