Police are investigating a shooting incident involving police ranks and armed men which occurred on Sunday January 26, 2026 about 14:00hrs in the Mara Mara Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occured when four police ranks were on roving patrol operations in the area. During the operation, the ranks parked their All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) at a strategic location and continued patrols on foot in the surrounding area.
After completing checks, two ranks later proceeded to the location where they had parked the ATVs to retrieve them, while the other members of the patrol remained in the area conducting further checks.
While en route, the two ranks encountered three males dressed in camouflage and tactical clothing, each armed with high-powered rifles. Upon being spotted, the suspects opened fire in the direction of the police ranks. One rank returned fire and both ranks took cover, after which the suspects retreated and made good their escape into the dense forest.
The remainder of the patrol team responded to the location and assisted the ranks.
One police rank sustained minor injuries to his knee and rib area as a result of a fall while taking cover. No other injuries were reported.
Investigations are ongoing.
