The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 23:30 hrs on Sunday, January 25, 2026, along the Diamond New Interlink Road, East Bank Demerara.
The collision involved a minibus and a motor car and resulted in the death of 33-year-old Jason Bhojedat of Annandale, East Coast Demerara, the driver of the minibus. A 31-year-old male passenger of Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, sustained injuries.
Preliminary investigations revealed that motor car PKK 6633 was travelling south along the eastern driving lane, allegedly at a fast rate, behind minibus BAK 8702. While attempting to overtake, the motor car collided with the right rear of the minibus.
As a result of the impact, the minibus slammed into a light pole, overturned several times, and came to a halt on the western parapet. Bhojedat was flung from the vehicle and landed on the roadway in an unconscious state.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor on duty. The body was subsequently taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The injured minibus passenger and the driver of the motor car were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they were treated and later discharged.
The driver of the motor car, a 28-year-old labourer of Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation. A breathalyzer test was not conducted due to injuries to his mouth, for which he received stitches.
Investigations are ongoing.
