Over the years, the Ministry of Agriculture, through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and other agencies, implemented a series of targeted land development and drainage and irrigation (D&I) interventions in Susannah’s Rust and surrounding communities in the Demerara River, off the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, to reduce flooding, improve water management, and support agricultural production.

These works included the rehabilitation and desilting of drainage channels, upgrades to culverts and outfall structures, improvements to irrigation access, and land clearing and preparation to make additional acreage suitable for cultivation.

In addition, farmers benefited from the distribution of planting materials and other agricultural inputs, aimed at boosting crop establishment, productivity, and on-farm resilience.
Collectively, these efforts reflect the Government’s continued commitment to climate-resilient infrastructure, expanded arable lands, and improved livelihoods for farmers in Susannah’s Rust.
Developmental works are ongoing.
