Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat said that Trinidad and Tobago has stronger leadership now, as the twin-island’s new government works to boost oil and gas production.
Bharrat made the comment during a speech at the Guyana Energy Conference on Wednesday, following a comment by Trinidad’s Energy Minister Roodal Moonilall that the country was able to increase production in recent months. Moonilall said Trinidad had faced declining oil and gas production for years but lately saw incremental growth.
While Moonilall framed the production growth as only preliminary as the government works out a broader strategy, Bharrat said it is a sign of what happens when leadership is incisive.
Trinidad and Tobago changed administrations in May 2025 when Kamla Persad-Bissessar became Prime Minister.
Bharrat explained that Guyana is engaged in talks at the conference about the potential for Guyana to help Trinidad restart the shuttered Pointe-A-Pierre refinery, which needs 150,000 barrels per day of oil supply. Trinidad has sought this collaboration for years, through calls from officials in the previous government.
