The Ministry of Agriculture on Monday hosted a vibrant Phagwah programme at its Head Office, as Guyanese, more specifically members of the Hindu community, prepare to observe Holi.
Delivering remarks at the celebration, Agriculture Minister, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, noted that Guyana is a unique nation where there is multi-religious participation in every religious observance. He reflected on the significance of Phagwah, reminding those gathered that the festival tells the timeless story of the triumph of good over evil and encourages citizens to overcome the forces that seek to divide society.
Minister Mustapha emphasized that in Guyana, Holi is a celebration of unity in diversity and a symbol of peace and togetherness. He underscored that the objective of His Excellency, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and the Government is to continue promoting harmony and national unity, ensuring that the country moves forward in a positive direction. The festival also highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage, serving as a powerful reminder that despite our differences, we are one people—celebrating unity, cultural pride, peace, and national togetherness.
Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is an ancient Hindu festival that originated in India and marks the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil, rooted in the legend of Prahlad and Holika. Over time, it has become a joyous celebration characterized by the throwing of colored powders, symbolizing love, renewal, and the breaking down of social barriers.
