Leader of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Aubrey Norton, has issued a stern warning to the Guyana Government that it should act in accordance with the recognition that the United States of America is only looking out for its own interest.

Norton, during a press conference today, said that his party has taken note of the comments made by United States Ambassador Nicole Theriot, where she expressed the view that the government has the Guyanese people’s best interests at heart. She also praised the scale of infrastructure works across the country.

In response to these comments, the APNU Leader said that Ambassador Theriot has seemingly forgotten “her own Secretary of State, [Marco Rubio]’s view that the Heroes highway was poorly built, and him describing it as ‘concussion road’.”

Norton went on to remind the Guyana Government that “the US does not have permanent friends, only permanent interests and that Guyana needs to recognize this fact and act appropriately”.

He noted that while his party welcomes the support of the US government for the legitimate concerns of the Guyanese people, “we find it unfortunate that the Ambassador will appear to support a government that continually refuses to deliver voter biometrics and a clean voters list.”

Rubio, in Suriname last year, shortly after he visited Guyana, spoke about the poor quality of roads here.

“We almost all had concussions, because the road was so bad it was terrible. They paid these people to build this road, and then they bring their workers. They bring their workers; they don’t hire you, they bring their workers in to do all the work. And then they want you to borrow a bunch of money, and then they hold it over your head,” Rubio said.

According to Norton, nothing has changed.
