Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, has said the government’s nationwide distribution of the $100,000 cash grant to shut-in persons is well advanced, with thousands already benefitting through a special home-based registration and payment system.

Speaking with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Wednesday, Dr Singh explained that the initiative was specifically designed to ensure persons with mobility challenges are not left behind.

The senior minister noted that his ministry has been working closely with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and other agencies to identify eligible beneficiaries using the ministry’s register of shut-in persons.

He noted that several teams were deployed countrywide to visit beneficiaries, assist with registration and facilitate the distribution process.

According to the Minister, the initiative also required a special payment arrangement, with cheques being prepared and delivered directly to beneficiaries at their homes.

“That process has gone very well. It’s not fully completed as yet, but it is far advanced. We’ve covered literally thousands of shut-ins who have already been registered and have already received their cash grants,” Dr Singh said. (Department of Public Information)
