President Irfaan Ali has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing electricity costs by as much as 50%across Guyana, with phased reductions already announced in several communities supported by renewable-energy infrastructure.
The initiative has begun in areas where solar installations and battery-backup systems are already in place. Residents of Bartica and communities in Region One are among the first to benefit from the announced phased reductions in electricity charges.
Similar measures are expected to be introduced in Region 2, Leguan and Wakenaam, where solar-energy systems have been installed.
President Ali also noted that assessments are underway in Lethem, where a hydropower station is located, to determine how a phased reduction in electricity costs can be implemented there.
“We are committed to this and the consumers will definitely benefit tremendously from this phased reduction in electricity,” President Ali said.
He added that, in the coming months, additional communities across the country will be included in the programme as the government.
