Police are investigating a fatal incident that occurred at about 17:30 hrs on Sunday, August 30, 2026, along the St Cuthbert’s Mission Trail, Mahaica River, East Coast Demerara.
The incident involved motor car PAJ 5607, owned and driven by a 28-year-old welder of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway. The occupants were a 24-year-old woman and a 4-year-old, of the same address.
According to the driver, he was proceeding west along the trail when an approaching vehicle travelling at a fast rate created a large cloud of dust which obstructed his vision.
He alleged that another motor car subsequently entered his lane, causing him to swerve to avoid a collision and reportedly lose control of his vehicle, which overturned several times. He and the two occupants sustained injuries and were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, and the 4-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver and female occupant were treated and discharged.
The child’s body was taken to Sandy’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The scene was visited and examined by Police ranks.
The driver is currently in custody and assisting with the ongoing investigation.
