Police have recovered two pieces of copper wire suspected to be connected to the recent theft of copper cables from the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
The discovery was made on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 22:20 hrs, as police continued investigations into the reported theft of 90 feet of 4/350 KCMIL copper cable, valued at approximately $1.62 million.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police ranks went to a location at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, where a search was conducted. Two pieces of copper wire were found.
The copper wire was photographed and lodged as part of the investigation.
A 52-year-old man was arrested and remains in police custody.
The development comes a day after police reported that the 90 feet of copper cable had allegedly been stolen from the bridge sometime between 00:00 hrs on August 23, 2026, and 09:00 hrs on September 1, 2026.
According to police, the bridge is equipped with LED lights attached to steel poles along its high span. The lights, which are powered by a generator beneath the bridge, are used to display various colours and were last operated on August 23.
At about 18:30 hrs on August 31, an electrical maintenance engineer attempted to illuminate the bridge in the colours of Trinidad and Tobago’s national flag in observance of that country’s Independence Anniversary. However, only the lights on the northern side were functioning.
At approximately 09:00 hrs on September 1, the engineer and his team inspected the southern side of the bridge and discovered that the copper cables had been cut and removed from the metal trunking box.
The matter was reported to the Providence Police Station at about 09:30 hrs, and detectives visited the scene.
Investigations are continuing.
