A serving member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) who is accused of stealing his colleague’s phone was today charged and released on self bail after denying the offence.
Ornesto Thomas, 22, a police constable, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that, on March 5, 2019 at the Police Sports Club Ground, Kingston, Georgetown, he stole one phone valued at 60,000 and one SIM card valued at $2,000, the property of Sergeant Carl Saul.
According to information, the accused is stationed at the Canine Section Mounted Branch Compound, Eve Leary, and attached to the Sports Secretariat as an athlete.
On the day in question, the victim was at the police Sports Club Ground coaching his female football team. The court heard that, upon completion of the training session, the victim made checks for his phone and discovered it missing.
A report was then made to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) where an investigation was launched, which led to the arrest of the defendant who admitted under caution to finding the phone and discarding of the SIM card.
He allegedly told ranks that he sold the phone to a known individual in Albouystown.
Legal advice was then sought and Thomas was later charged for the offence. He was released on self bail and instructed to make his next court appearance on May 14.
