While President, David Granger, has committed to giving the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) the financial support it needs for holding general and regional elections, it would still have to justify its $3.5B request to make this possible.

This was noted this morning by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, during a post-Cabinet press briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency.

There, Minister Harmon said, “The [GECOM] Chairman [Justice Retired, James Patterson] can say, ‘I need this.’ But they have to give information that is required for the Ministry of Finance to provide that money. Because you can’t say that you need $10B and it is provided; there has to be justification for any sum. They have to justify that.”

Harmon was not able to confirm if this process has started between GECOM and the Finance Ministry.
