Days after a West Ruimveldt woman was nabbed at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport with seven pounds of cocaine strapped to her body, she was this morning charged and sentenced for the offence after pleading guilty.

Fifty-five-year-old Sandra Angela Profitt, of John Fernandes Drive West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was sentenced to four years in jail along with a fine of $9.1M when she appeared before Magistrate Rushell Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

She pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which stated that, on April 29,2019 at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara, she had in her possession 3.378 kilograms of cocaine, at a street value of $3.5M, for the purpose of trafficking.

The apologetic woman, who cried throughout the court proceeding, stated, “My son had been involved in an accident and the owner of the car demanded that he buy a new car because of the damages it sustained.”

She added, “As a mother, I could not sit and watch my son go through that so I decided to traffick the cocaine in order to help my son.”

Facts presented by Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford, stated that, on the day in question, Profitt was sitting in the departure area waiting to board a LIAT flight destined for Barbados when she was intercepted by CANU ranks who observed her acting in a suspicious manner.

The court heard Profit was contacted and a search was carried out on her possession.
It was then a rank observed six parcels of cocaine strapped to her legs, three on each thigh.

She was then arrested and taken into custody where she cooperated with ranks and provided details about her supplier.

The magistrate, after listening to the facts, sentenced Profitt to 4 years of imprisonment to make an example to others who are contemplating to commit similar offences. She was also fined $9.1M.

Last evening, CANU also issued a wanted bulletin for Winston “Chief Mike” Carto of lot 193 Greenheart Street South Ruimveldt Gardens.

Carto is wanted in connection with recruiting Profitt to traffick the cocaine.

CANU is asking that anyone with information about the whereabouts of Carto to contact CANU on 227-3507 or 226-0431.
