Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus this afternoon remanded a woman to prison for allegedly having in her possession 220 grams of marijuana hidden away in a box of panty liners.

The woman, 35-year-old Shaffen Donette of Mahdia, denied the charge which stated that on June 8, 2019 at Three Miles, Mahdia, she had in her possession 220 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

The woman allegedly had the illegal substance concealed in a box of Kotex panty liners.

According to information, on the day in question, the woman was a passenger on a bus which was stopped by ranks from the Mahdia Police Station.

It was while an officer was searching the woman’s belongings that leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be marijuana were discovered inside of a Kotex panty liner box which she had in her handbag.

Donette was then arrested and subsequently charged with the offence.

Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to bail being granted to the woman on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.

Hence, the magistrate remanded Donette to prison. She was instructed to make her next court appearance on July 15.
