Two youths who allegedly tried to kill a man whom they were consuming alcohol with were today charged and remanded on a joint attempted murder charge.

Shamar Matthias, 23, and Leonard Bennett, 20, both miners, were not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on June 4, 2019 at Cuyuni River, with the intent to commit murder, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded Vicky Willams.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels stated that on the day in question, the defendants, who are friends with Williams, were consuming alcohol at a shop when an argument ensued.

The court heard that the defendants armed themselves with beer bottles and dealt Williams several stabs about his body. The victim then fell to the ground and the men picked up a piece of wood and hit him across his head.

Williams was then rushed to Suddie Hospital where he was treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remains a patient.

The matter was then reported, an investigation was carried out, and the defendants were arrested for the offence.

They were told of the allegation and they allegedly told ranks they acted in self-defence.

The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded the defendants to prison. They were instructed to make their next court appearance on June 26.
