Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus this afternoon committed a security guard to stand trial in the High Court on an attempted murder charge.

Rondel Mitchell, 30, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on October 28, 2018 at Meadow Bank Fishery Wharf, he discharged a firearm at Aquacie Harvey with the intent to commit murder.

The magistrate this afternoon ruled that after going through the entirety of the evidence of the prosecution witnesses, she was satisfied that sufficient evidence was presented throughout the Preliminary Inquiry (PI). Hence, she committed Mitchell to stand trial. Mitchell will go on trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

According to information, on the day in question, Harvey was at the wharf when Mitchell took out a cell phone and took a picture of him.

Harvey then questioned Mitchell about why he took the photo. In turn, Mitchell became annoyed and pulled out a 9mm Glock pistol and fired several shots in Harvey’s direction.

Harvey was shot to the abdomen in the process and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

The matter was then reported, an investigated was carried out, and Mitchell was charged with the offence.
