Two more youths threw themselves at the mercy of the court this afternoon after they pleaded guilty to killing 75-year-old Professor Pairadeau “Perry” Mars, who was found dead in his Prashad Nagar, Georgetown home on May 12, 2016. This afternoon, Nikisha Dover, 20, and Orin McRae were arraigned before Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court in Demerara.

The duo, initially indicted for the murder of Mars, opted to plead guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter. Their guilty pleas were accepted by Justice Singh who remanded them to prison until Friday, July 12, 2019 for the presentation of probation reports and their sentencing.

About two weeks ago, 18-year-old Naomi Adams also pleaded guilty to killing Professor Mars. She returns to court next week Monday, June 24, 2019 for the presentation of a probation report as well as sentencing.

It is the prosecution’s case that Dover, McRae, and others went into Mars’ home at Lot 395 Bissessar Street, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown and held him down while others choked him to death. The elderly man’s home was also robbed. His cause of death was given as manual asphyxiation compounded by blunt trauma.

Professor Mars studied History at the University of Guyana. He had specialised in African Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Prosecutors Tuanna Hardy, Teriq Mohamed, and Sarah Martin appeared for the State while attorneys-at-law Mohamed Ali and Adrian Thompson appeared for Dover and McRae respectively.
