Since emerging victorious at the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), where it was noted that the December 21, 2018 No-Confidence Motion was validly passed, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has turned up the heat on the government. In fact, the General Secretary noted recently that the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will be heading into protest mode on Monday next. But even as he and his members continue preparations in this regard, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo is cautioning all to bear in mind that the former Head of State is one who cannot be trusted as he has an unhealthy obsession with power.

Speaking with the Guyana Standard recently, the AFC Political Advisor stressed that Guyanese have legitimate fears of Jagdeo’s return to office. Furthermore, the Prime Minister categorically stated that the nation has had enough of Jagdeo and his proxies, alluding to the widely held perception that former President Donald Ramotar was a mere puppet of Jagdeo. It is also believed that the PPP’s Presidential Candidate Irfaan Ali is another one of Jagdeo’s proxies.

The Prime Minister also sought to allay fears that the APNU+AFC party is too soft to handle the PPP which has, in the eyes of some observers, been in election campaign mode for the last four years. Nagamootoo said that the coalition is by no means “a soft party”.

The AFC Executive Member said, “The coalition is a democratic alliance and I have seen how it has treated with the opposition in a very measured way. And we are very conscious that we should not be baited by the opposition and incur an image either of a repressive or intolerant government. We have given the Jagdeo opposition space for it to express itself.” He said too that the PPP has been given room to express political agenda, “which has proven to be largely divisive and negative.”

Nagamootoo added, “So we will not play into that.”

The Prime Minister described the Jagdeo-led PPP as a troublesome entity and boasted that the citizenry will make the right choice at the polls.
