At his press conference today, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo said he is hopeful that President David Granger will consider one of the 18 names he had previously submitted as a suitable candidate to fill the post of Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). However, in the event that the President does not find favour with any of those nominees, Jagdeo said that the PPP is already making moves to prepare a new list of applicants.

Further to this, Jagdeo said he is prepared to explore names outside of Guyana as he understands individuals from the Commonwealth can also be proffered for the position.

The PPP General Secretary said he is prepared to engage with President Granger continuously on this matter for resolution to be had. Further, Jagdeo has since indicated to the President that he is willing and available to meet on the issue but he is still to receive a response.

He also expressed satisfaction in the fact that Justice (Retired) James Patterson has since left the office of GECOM Chairman following the ruling by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) that his unilateral appointment was unconstitutional.
