The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has issued a call to Guyanese to not be misled by allegations that the party’s office in Region Nine is issuing “fake” birth certificates to residents in Lethem.

These allegations were communicated in the state-owned newspaper, the Guyana Chronicle, yesterday, August 30. The article stated, “DAMNING revelations of scores of persons residing in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) being in possession of fake birth certificates were made by Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) scrutineers during the ongoing house-to-house registration.”

According to the article, “When those in possession of these documents were asked where they got them, fingers were pointed to the Region Nine branch of Freedom House.” The newspaper quoted Wendella Franklin, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) – the largest partner of the APNU – Chairperson as saying, “A lot of persons have been going there, and we have been getting some concerns that they were issuing birth certificates.”

The PPP/C is now labelling the allegations as an attempt being made by “the increasingly desperate APNU+AFC caretaker government.”

The PPP/C statement reads:

“The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is calling on Guyanese not to be misled by the increasingly desperate APNU+AFC caretaker government.

The latest example is an article carried today, Friday August 30th, by the taxpayer-funded Guyana Chronicle, under the headline ‘Fake birth certificates surface in Lethem’, in which it is claimed that the PPP Region Nine office is issuing fake birth certificates.

This false accusation is demonstrative of the government’s increasing desperation since the successful passage of the December 21, 2018, no-confidence motion (NCM).

The taxpayer-funded state newspaper has been usurped as the mouthpiece of the dominant Party in the coalition, the People’s National Congress (PNC), which will spare no effort to wantonly spread misinformation to deliberately mislead and to create a sense of uneasiness as election looms.

Having failed abysmally in office through unbridled ineptitude and corruption and having failed in its sinister plan to disenfranchise thousands of Guyanese through house-to-house registration, the caretaker government will continue to fabricate scenarios to distract from its unrestrained violation of the constitution and the rule of law.”

Meanwhile, the Guyana Standard understands that an investigation has since been launched by GECOM and the Ministry of Citizenship, to ascertain the validity of these reports.
