A 65-year-old pedal cyclist died on the spot earlier today when a truck ran over his head at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE)

The deceased has been identified as Christian Bowlin of Parika Backdam. He was heading home when he met his demise. The driver of the truck, GWW 4008 has been arrested and is assisting with the investigation. He was given a breathalyzer but no trace of alcohol was found.

The Guyana Standard was informed that this morning, both the truck driver and pedal cyclist were heading in the same direction when the driver attempted to overtake the deceased.

Reports are that as the truck was driving pass Bowlin, he fell onto the roadway, causing the back wheel of the truck to crush his head. He died on the spot.

Traffic ranks at the scene said that at this point they were not able to verify whether the truck hit the pedal cyclist when it passed next to him, causing him to fall, or whether the vehicle passed too close to the elderly man, resulting in him falling.

An investigation is ongoing.
