Days after pedal cyclist, Govindra Prashad was killed in an accident on the Essequibo Coast by an alleged drunk driver, the man was today charged with several offences.

Jason Persaud appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Leguan Magistrate’s Court where he was slapped with four charges.

It is alleged that on October 28, 2019, on the Essequibo Coast, Persaud failed to render assistance to an injured person and failed to stop after an accident. Persaud was also charged for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing death by dangerous driving.

He pleaded not guilty to the offences and was released on a total of $325,000 bail.

Persaud was instructed to make his next court appearance on November 25, at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.

According to reports, on the day in question, the young man was riding his bike on his way home around 19:00 hrs when the accident occurred.

It was reported that motor car PXX 6207, which was driven by Persaud was heading west along the public road when the driver lost control and collided with the rear wheel of Prashad’s cycle.

The young man was reportedly dragged under the car and was later picked up in an unconscious state and was rushed to Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver reportedly fled the scene of the accident.

However, he was later arrested and a Breathalyzer test was later carried out on him which revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol.
