A two-day-old baby died yesterday morning, one day after he fell out of a hammock at Morabisi River, Issano, in the Mazaruni River.

The dead infant has been identified as Lance Douglas. His 29-year-old mother delivered him at home on Saturday.

Guyana Standard has been informed that on Sunday, the woman made a small hammock and began rocking the newborn to sleep.

However, one side of the hammock burst, resulting in the baby falling to the ground inside the house.

The mother, upon examining the child for injury, did not notice any marks and proceeded to put the baby to sleep.

The following day, however, when she attempted to feed him, he did not respond

It was then discovered that the infant had bruises on his back and shoulder. He was taken to the village’s health centre where he was pronounced dead.

The mother has not been questioned by the police as yet.
