An 18-year prison sentence was today imposed on Sharief Bacchus, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully killing Chan Wen Wong.

Bacchus, also known as ‘Choka Dhall’ pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter, thereby admitting that on July 20, 2017, he unlawfully killed Wong, known as ‘Chiney Man.’

He was initially charged with murder.

According to reports, Bacchus and Wong, 42, were both fishermen and worked at the Meadow Bank Wharf, Georgetown.

On the day in question, the men were involved in an altercation which led to a fight.They were parted by onlookers and Wong walked away.

However, he was pursued by Bacchus who whipped out a sharp object and stabbed him to the chest.

An injured Wong collapsed to the ground and had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The prison sentence was imposed by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Demerara.
