The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) elections Commissioners have criticized the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for further delaying the conclusion of the electoral process, and has asked both foreign and international observers, as well as the international community to take note.

In a statement issued earlier today, PPP/C Commissioners Sase Gunraj, Robeson Benn and Bibi Shaddick said that the ruling of the Full Court has removed any impediment for GECOM to conduct a recount of all the ballots cast in the March 2 General and Regional Elections. As a result, they said they expected GECOM’s chairperson, Justice Claudette Singh to summon a meeting to decide on the earliest possible date to commence the recount.

The Commissioners said that the Chairperson had sent an inquiry regarding their availability for a meeting at 10:00hrs today, April 1, 2020. They further said that around 08:43hrs, today, they received an email stating that the Government Commissioners requested to be given an opportunity to read the decision of the Full Court, as the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the way forward.

In light of the foregoing, the Government Commissioners requested that the meeting will be held tomorrow morning instead. The PPP Commissioners stressed that this position is unacceptable since the decision of the Full Court was broadcast live on national media.

“The world had access to it. The judgment was pellucid and requires little explanation, if any. The nation and world anxiously awaits a resolution of this matter that is now one month old. We recall the numerous occasions on which such stalling measures were employed with the inevitable result being to facilitate some dilatory tactic or the other,” the trio added.

They want GECOM to call a meeting immediately and warned that there are legal constitutional remedies for non-attendance.

“How much longer are we going to allow GECOM to operate to the detriment of the national interest?” the PPP Commissioners asked.
