A 68-year-old pillion rider died in an accident earlier today while her husband is battling for his life at the New Amsterdam hospital.

The accident happened sometime around 13:00 hrs on the Number 71 Village Public Road, Corentyne Berbice.

The deceased has been identified as Lalita Rambarran of Number 71 Village. Her husband, Rishie Rambarran is said to be in a critical condition and efforts are being made to transfer him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

According to information received, the wounded Rambarran, who was the motorcyclist, was proceeding west on the public road when they collided with a car that was travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact of the crash resulted in the couple falling on the roadway, landing some several feet from the point of impact.

One of the deceased’s legs was severed. She died on the spot. Her husband received a lot of injuries.

The driver of the car is presently in custody.
