A man who is accused of murdering his former father-in-law during a scuffle has been charged and remanded to prison.

Zakir Hossain appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. The charge was read to him via Zoom.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on June 25, 2020, at Riverview Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he murdered Alexi Gomes.

According to information, on June 21, 2020, Gomes saw his former son-in-law and grandson standing in front of a shop in Riverview.

He stretched out his arms to hug the little boy. However, the child’s father pulled the child away and punched Gomes, causing him to fall.

It was reported that when the 54-year-old man got up, a scuffle ensued between them, during which Hossain picked up a piece of wood and dealt him several lashes to his head.

The man was picked up in an unconscious state by a relative and was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

A post mortem revealed that Gomes’ cause of death was as a result of blunt trauma to the brain.

The matter was reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station and following an investigation, Hossain was arrested and charged for murder.

The murder accused was remanded to prison until July 20, 2020.
