Veteran Trade Unionist, Lincoln Lewis was today released on bail after denying allegations of assault and abusive language.

He appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court. The charges alleged that on August 13, 2020, Lewis assaulted and made use of abusive language toward Radesh Lall.

The charges stemmed following a dispute between Lewis and residents of Kingelly Village, West Coast Berbice, over ancestral lands dating back to the 1960s. The residents are alleging that Lewis is attempting to seize the hundred of acres of lands that have been in their possession for years.

Over 30 residents from the village travelled to Georgetown, where they met with various authorities regarding the issues.

Already, Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, Minister of Housing and Water, Colin Croal, and Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, have all acknowledged receipt of the residents’ complaints and said that steps are being taken to address the issue.
