A young mother of four who told the court she decided to traffic a quantity of marijuana to provide for her four children, has been sentenced to two years behind bars and fined $754,500.

Thirty-five-year-old Anitha Qullis of 1856 New Amsterdam Berbice, was jailed by Magistrate Crystal Lambert following a probation report.

Qullis, on her first court appearance had pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which stated that on September 19, 2020, at Karrau Village Essequibo River, she had in her possession 503 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

The woman, in her explanation stated, “I accepted the weed. I am a mother of four and my children father left for the interior and I never heard from him again. I decided to try a thing to provide for my children.”

Facts presented in the matter stated that on the day in question, at about 14:30 hrs, ranks were on mobile patrol duty at Karrau Village Essequibo River when they observed the woman acting in a suspicious manner.

The woman was questioned as to if she had anything illegal or unlawful in her possession.
She then handed over a black compressed parcel containing a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis which was under her clothing.

She was then arrested and escorted to the Bartica Police Station.
