A Lance Corporal attached to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), who was seen on camera assaulting a police officer, was today slapped with several charges.
Kester Bowen of Parfaite Harmonie, W.B.D, this morning appeared at the Wales Magistrate’s Court before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty.

Bowen was charged for driving an uninsured motor vehicle; driving an uncertified motor vehicle, and prohibition of tinted glass.

Bowen, who was represented by Attorney-at-law Glen Hanoman, pleaded guilty to all the charges and was fined a total of $42,500. Bowen is, however, still in police custody, awaiting an investigation into other matters.

Last Friday, Bowen was captured on camera assaulting traffic officer Constable 24030 Wilson just around 20:00hrs at the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

It was reported that Wilson was conducting Anti-Crime Patrol duties – directing the east bound traffic, which had two lanes that merged into one on the Meer-Zorgen Public Road. While doing so, he observed a dark grey motor car trying to change lanes and, in the process, caused congestion of traffic.

As a result, Wilson approached the driver of the said motor car and told him of the offense committed and then instructed him to pull to the corner of the said road.

The driver of the car, after being instructed by Constable Wilson, allegedly became annoyed, exited the said vehicle, and chucked the rank. Constable Wilson then warned the driver about his behavior and asked him to desist.

Bowen allegedly ignored all warnings and proceeded to further assault the Constable by choking him and throwing several cuffs about his face and body, causing him to receive injuries.

Wilson was then assisted by other ranks who managed to arrest Bowen and take him into custody.
