A pedal cyclist died last evening after being struck down by a motorcar on the Number 8, Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

Dead is 21-year-old Shemar Nataniel Nurse of Number 8 village, West Coast Berbice.

Reports are that at about 19:30hrs on Friday, motorcar bearing registration number HD 1565 was proceeding east along the northern side of the Public Road, while the pedal cyclist was proceeding west along the southern side of the road.

It is alleged by the driver of the motorcar that the pedal cyclist was riding behind a motor lorry when he suddenly swerved into the center of the road.

The driver added that upon seeing the pedal cyclist, he pulled north to avoid a collision but despite his effort, the right side front portion of the car collided with the pedal cyclist.

As a result of the collision, Shemar was thrown to the bonnet, then to the front windscreen, before landing on the roadway. He received injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited persons and conveyed to Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Shemar’s body then taken to Bailey’s Funeral Home and is awaiting a Post- Mortem Examination (PME).

A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver showed zero micrograms of alcohol. Nevertheless, the investigation is continuing.
