A hire car driver and a labourer were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of an armed robbery committed on August 5, 2017, at Number 69 Village, Corentyne.
Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh handed down the sentence against Rabindra Kumar, 30, also known as “Robin” or “Buckman” and Satyavan Bhawan, 49, called “Rajesh” or “Blacka,” when the trial came to an end at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
Initially, Kumar and Bhawan were jointly charged with four other men for the robbery under arms committed on Sachin Ramrattan on August 5, 2017, at Lot 177 Section A No. 69 Village, Corentyne.
According to initial reports, Ramrattan’s wife Vidya Gopaul and their then 4-year-old son had retired to bed at 22:30 hrs. The then-pregnant woman was in her bed when she heard noise and voices and awoke her husband.
Fearful, the husband jumped off their bed and switched on the lights, and it was then that they realized bandits had entered their home.
He switched on the lights to ward off the men while his then-pregnant wife bolted the bedroom door. The men were already in the house and banging on the bedroom door. But Ramrattan, his wife, and son scaled their bedroom window and landed on their neighbor’s shed.
By then, some of the men had entered the room and opened fire, but the family ran for their safety.
They managed to run to Gopaul’s mother’s house located two houses away from theirs and immediately contacted the police.
The men reportedly ransacked, ate, and drank during the time spent at the house in search of valuables. They escaped with an estimated $1.2Million in jewellery, US $1000, a tablet, and a cellphone.
Consequently, when the matter was called before Magistrate Singh, he found both the accused guilty and sentenced them to four years each behind bars.
