A Crane, West Coast Demerara (WCD) businessman was today remanded to prison for trafficking over 4 kilograms of marijuana.

47-year-old Rayan Joseph, also known as “Decky” was hauled before Magistrate Crystal Lambert in the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on January 2, 2021, he had in his possession 4 kilograms of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

The court heard that Police, acting on information received, went to the home of the businessman and executed a search on his property at about 05:30hrs.

During the search of the lower flat of the building, Joseph reportedly opened a blue plastic barrel and a black garbage bag was discovered.

Upon checking, ranks unearthed three bulky transparent plastic parcels containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

Further, a search was carried out at the back of his yard, during which a cannabis Sativa plant measuring about two and a half feet in height was found under a golden apple tree.

The businessman was shown the said plant and told of the offence, and he admitted saying that “is me plant don’t involve me family.”

Joseph and his wife were arrested and escorted to the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, along with the suspected narcotics. The ganja was weighed in their presence and amounted to 4,236 grams.

Magistrate Lambert, after listening to the facts of the matter, remanded Joseph to prison until January 25, 2021.
