Former Telecommunication Minister and Alliance for Change (AFC) Vice-Chairperson, Catherine Hughes has taken umbrage to a Facebook post made by Education Minister, Priya Manickchand regarding the establishment of smart classrooms in Guyana.

Manickchand, following the commissioning of a smart classroom at Queen’s College, posted on February 10: “2nd smart classroom being commissioned in a public school in Guyana by the Government. The first was done in 2014 at North Ruimveldt Secondary. This one is at Queen’s College. Sadly, none were done between 2014 and now. The aim is to have one in each and every school beginning with the High Schools. The potential this offers is mind-blowingly limitless. PPP/C = vision with action.”

But Hughes said Manickchand’s post is riddled with “misinformation and lies”, and an attempt to “rewrite history”.

“I want the members of the public and the press to know that nothing can be further from the truth…Between 2015 and July 2020, the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) in association with the then Ministry of Education Ministry of Education, opened and operationalized 11 smart classrooms, contrary to the current Minister’s statement that none were done,” she told a news conference this afternoon.

She claims that these smart classrooms were established at Queens’ College, East Ruimveldt Secondary, Leonora Secondary, Skeldon/Linepath Secondary, New Amsterdam Multilateral, President’s College, Brickdam Secondary, Christiansburg Secondary, Bushlot Secondary, Soesdyke Secondary, and the 8th of May Secondary.

“How does one explain the blatant misrepresentation of the facts by Minister Manickchand?” Hughes queried.
