The Coalition party asking for a 10 percent salary increase for public servants after making 30,000 workers redundant during its five-year tenure is ironic, says Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha. He regarded the request made by Coalition Member of Parliament (MP), Khemraj Ramjattan in the House this morning as nothing but an attempt at “playing on the emotions of people”. Mustapha concluded that Ramjattan was engaging in “cheap politics”.

Mustapha told the House that there are monies in the budget for public servants, although he did not speak to the percentage that will be granted.

The Agriculture Minister went on to lambaste the Coalition for not recognising the budget as a “comprehensive, visionary and transformative” one. He said that while the party continues to label the budget as inept, several local organisations have hailed it a success, and have expressed congratulatory sentiments regarding budgetary provisions.
