The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) is suggesting that the two containers from Guyana intercepted in Jamaica with over 300lbs of cocaine, might have been “contaminated” after security checks were done in Guyana.

“Investigations revealed that security checks were done by the Guyana Revenue Authority personnel before the departure of the shipment and it is suspected that the containers may have been contaminated after those security checks were done,” CANU said in a statement earlier this evening.

It noted also, that shippers relating to relevant consignments have been contacted and are assisting with the joint investigation into the matter.

The Jamaica Gleaner which first reported the matter, noted that the drug was found in two of six transshipment containers that were en route to Haiti and China.

Guyana Standard was informed that the drugs were hidden in rice and timber. While searching the containers, Narcotics Police accompanied by members of the Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Team found a total of 122 packages (110 in one and 12 in another).

The total weight of the drugs is approximately 139.4 kilograms (307 pounds) and the estimated street value is US$6.59 million.
