The Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) has announced that it is in receipt of a payment made on March 1, 2021, for the outstanding balance by D. Sookram, owner of the tug & barge (Rediston and Surtrans) that collided with the bridge last year. The DHBC says that D. Sookram is no longer indebted to the DHBC.

Sources at the Ministry of Public Works have informed that the estimated damage was pegged at $16.5M.

The said tug and barge collided with the southern section of the Demerara Harbour Bridge High-Span (span# 30 to 32) on December 9, 2020. Subsequently, an agreement was signed between the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation and the businessman with a payment plan which requires him to make an initial payment upon signing and the balance in quarterly installments until full payment is made.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation said that it would like to express thanks to Deonarine Sookram for his commitment to fulfilling these obligations and bringing closure to this matter.
